Period. End of Sentence, a short film about menstruation in India, won an Oscar in 2019 for Best Short Documentary and opened up the conversation about periods. However, to what extent do overseas projects depict accurate narratives of ‘lesser developed’ countries?

This is what we were mindful of when implementing Project Untouchable Goddesses in Tatapani village of Nepal. We wanted to challenge representation of rural villagers in South Asia as uneducated or ‘backwards’. We wanted to understand their beliefs on the village’s menstrual practices and dismantle menstrual stigma.

Our documentary on Project Untouchable Goddesses focuses on villagers’ awareness about menstrual care and showcases how our project catered to the particular needs of women in Tatapani.
